    Why do you need CAT III 2000V measurements?

    In recent years, the increasing popularity of photovoltaic systems and electric vehicle batteries has created a whole new set of maintenance requirements, as has the demand for higher operating voltages. At the same time, the use of higher voltages poses greater safety risks.

    The CAT safety classification categorizes measurement locations by measurement category classes CAT II, CAT III, and CAT IV, based on the rated voltage between the lines, current capacity, and transient overvoltages at the measurement location. According to the international standard for the safety qualification of photovoltaic (PV) modules (IEC 61730-1), PV modules are classified as overvoltage CAT III and require measuring equipment capable of measuring CAT III.

    In this context, measuring instruments used for the maintenance of photovoltaic power plants must be able to withstand high voltages to ensure that they can be used safely. The use of instruments with the corresponding CAT safety rating helps to protect both the operator and the PV plant from serious accidents such as electric shocks and burn-outs.

    Currently, more and more systems are utilizing 1500 V photovoltaic power generation equipment, but as larger, more efficient systems come on line, there will be a need for instruments that can accommodate higher voltages in the future. Looking to the near future, the P2010 was created as a CAT III 2000 V compatible product.

    High voltages up to 2000 V can be safely measured by connecting the P2010 to a HIOKI HIOKI clamp meter or digital multimeter (DMM).
