Product Overview: 8588A Standard Digital Multimeter
Stability, simplicity and high performance from a single mind.
It is Fluke's deep technical heritage, superb design and skillful manufacturing processes that have resulted in the 8588A's excellent linearity, very low noise and very good stability by design. This model is an excellent large scale standard digital multi-meter that guarantees 3.5 μV/V one-year DC voltage relative accuracy @ 99% confidence level and long-term stability over a wide range of scales and functions.
The 8588A contains a very stable voltage reference and attenuator designed by Fluke Metrology Calibration. Using these precision components eliminates the need for daily internal calibration to compensate for drift. What's more, because the amplifier's offset characteristics are super-stable, auto-zeroing is not necessary either. 8588A delivers eight-and-a-half-bit resolution readings in less than one second, which dramatically improves efficiency.
Simple to use, the 8588A is the ideal laboratory multi-meter for metrologists and calibration lab managers, enabling them to easily configure and quickly reach peak instrument performance.
- 2.7 μV/V (95%) , 3.5 μV/V (99%), 1-year relative accuracy, DC voltage, no self-calibration or auto-zeroing needed
- 0.5 μV/V (95%) , 0.65 μV/V (99%) 24-hour stability, DC voltage
- 7 μΩ/Ω (95%) , 9 μΩ/Ω (99%) 1-year period, resistance
- 2.02x full scale extends the lower noise floor to higher signal levels, maximizing the instrument's high accuracy.
- 200 ns to 100s aperture settings for industry-leading flexibility in controlling the data capture window
Accuracy, offset and stability for ideal AC performance
The 8588A provides highly accurate AC True RMS measurement performance in Fluke's line of metrology multimeters.
The 8588A features an analog/digital converter with a sampling rate of up to 5 MS/s and a very stable DC analog signal path for ideal AC True RMS measurement performance. Compared with other similar instruments, it is 10 times faster, 2 times lower noise, and more sensitive to low-level signals. The instrument uses digital RMS calculations to ensure full resolution of digitized signals over a wide dynamic range.
Fast digital filters are more efficient than their analog counterparts and can be stabilized more quickly. Digital filters also avoid the dielectric absorption found on analog filters, which is often associated with residual tailing characteristics. Digital filters also reduce the build-up time to within 6 cycles of the filter frequency, which quickly brings the measurement to within 1 ppm of the fully stabilized value, which is more than 10 times faster than the low frequency measurement characteristics of other commonly used large scale precision digital multimeters.
Low noise is achieved by averaging the acquired high-resolution digitized data, coupled with an intrinsically stable signal path. Decoupling low-level signal sensitivity from temperature drift enables the 8588A to achieve highly accurate low-level AC measurements, thus avoiding the temperature drift, skew, and long-term instability normally associated with analog RMS converters.
- 60 μV/V (95%) , 77 μV/V (99%), 1-year relative accuracy, supports highest accuracy AC voltage measurements
- 250 μA/A (95%) , 323 μA/A (99%), 1-year relative accuracy, AC current
- 15 ms build-up time @ 1 kHz AC filter for 10x faster AC voltage measurements
- 2.02x full scale Vpp, 1.2x full scale Vrms
- Up to 30A AC current, greatly increasing the AC current measurement range

AC Voltage Measurement Settings
Designed by metrologists for use by metrologists
The 8588A is the ideal laboratory multi-meter, offering an easy-to-operate interface that supports English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish to simplify the measurement process while avoiding misunderstandings. With intuitive graphical screens, users easily view trends, histograms, complex waveforms, and statistics, as well as quickly perform metrology tasks. You can perform real-time capture and subsequent analysis of short- and long-term stability, identify and quantify drift, run noise, and do statistical analysis without the need for an external computer or software. Users can also quickly visualize post-processed frequency domain signals, including fundamental and harmonic amplitude and phase components.
Some of today's system multimeters utilize complex menu structures and obscure commands, while others have no user interface, creating challenges for training and operation. In contrast, the 8588A works naturally and makes training new users a breeze.
The front panel also features a number of new usability enhancements, and Visual Connection Management™ (VCM) visual terminal alerts show you the correct terminals to connect to avoid incorrect links. The new instrument handle is molded for comfort and ease of handling.
USB host ports are provided on both the front and back of the instrument. This allows both export of acquired data to external storage devices and facilitates firmware updates. For remote communication with a PC, Ethernet, GPIB or USBTMC connectors are available on the rear panel.
The 8588A provides full Fluke 8508A standard multimeter emulation and is also compatible with the Keysight 3458A digital multimeter via SCPI commands, making it an ideal replacement for these older instruments.
- Graphical screens with support for instant visualization of trend charts, statistical analysis, histograms and FFTs.
- GPIB, USBTMC, and Ethernet multi-snap support industry standard remote interface options.
- USB memory supports fast and easy data transfer to PC in .csv format.
- SCPI-compatible commands in the 8508A and 3458A emulation modes simplify and accelerate the upgrade process to the 8588A.
- Programmable front/rear version input switching allows ratiometric measurements between front and rear terminals, and supports not only DC voltage and resistance functions, but now also AC voltage, DC current, and AC current functions for ratiometric measurements with unmatched linearity and noise performance, and excellent transfer uncertainty.
- The capacitance and radio frequency (RF) power meter readings provided by the Rohde & Schwarz NRP series extend the utility of the 8588A for calibrating multi-product calibrators, effectively increasing the efficiency of the calibration lab.
