How does a spectrum analyzer work?

A signal that looks very complex in the time domain behaves quite differently in the frequency domain. Time domain measurements show an impure sine wave. Without frequency domain measurements, it is still impossible to know the source and frequency of the second harmonic. Spectral analysis can show the spectral components individually, thus revealing the source of the interference. While the information provided by the time domain (such as the rise and fall times of signal pulses) is important, the frequency domain allows you to determine the harmonic content of the signal, such as out-of-band emissions and distortion. • What is the importance of waveform sequencing?

    609

Waveform sequencing lets you create multiple configured waveforms that contain multiple common segments. Sorting lets you build complex, long waveforms using as little instrument memory as possible. Waveform sequencing lets you save storage capacity by replaying shorter waveforms at different locations on the signal as needed. Many tests require long waveform memory records. The required record length...

  • What is the difference between an oscilloscope and a spectrum analyzer/signal analyzer?

    349

We usually use time as a frame of reference, focusing on when certain specific events will occur. This includes electrical events. Oscilloscopes allow you to view the instantaneous value of a particular electrical event (or the voltage value of some other event converted by an appropriate transducer) over time. In other words, we can use an oscilloscope to view the waveform of a signal in the time domain. Fourier theory...

  • What is a benchtop DC power supply?

    627

A benchtop DC power supply is a power supply that is mounted to an engineer's workbench for use. It usually has a large, legible display and user interface to allow the engineer to easily achieve full control of the power supply from the front panel. Users can also control modern benchtop power supplies through software. In addition, engineers can easily access the output terminals from the front. Variable bench power supplies are a convenient electric...

  • How to use an arbitrary waveform generator?

    643

Using an arbitrary waveform generator, test engineers can verify the design of a circuit in just a few steps: (1) activate the output control; (2) select the waveform to be generated; (3) connect the output to the device under test; and (4) verify the performance of the device under test using an oscilloscope. The following is an example of the design of the output control circuit.
